With the NBA Draft deadline coming soon (May 31st), there are a number of players with decisions to make, when it comes to both the pro route and NCAA Basketball overall. There are a select number of eligible “grad transfers” that can still enter the portal without penalty. One of them is Tyler Burton, the star forward from Richmond that was third in the A-10 with 19.0 ppg and 7.4 rpg.
The 6’7 forward is a three-year starter, two of those ending up on an All-Atlantic 10 team. Burton’s only flaw was shooting just 29% from three-point range, though he shot 36% in the two seasons prior. He was a double-digit scorer in every single game this past year, including 14 games with at least 20 points.
There was a 6-game stretch where Burton had 20+ points, including at the start of league play where Richmond went 3-1. His career-high came earlier in the year, a 38-point effort on 12/20 shooting from the field in overtime against College of Charleston.
What makes Burton such an interesting player is that he’s a prolific shot-maker from the wing position. The 6’7 playmaker can get his shot anywhere on the court and with a better-supporting cast (was the lone double-digit scorer on the Spiders’ roster this past season), could really have a big year at the power conference level.
Assuming he doesn’t remain in the NBA Draft, look for there to be plenty of programs in the mix for Burton. Here’s an early prediction of eight teams that could be a nice match for the grad transfer.
