One of the more interesting players still left in the NCAA Basketball transfer portal in David Jones, a 6’6 guard/forward from the Dominican Republican. After two years at DePaul, Jones transferred to St. John’s in what ended up being the final year of the Coach Mike Anderson era.
The results were mixed, as the wing averaged 13.2 ppg and 6.8 rpg in 17 starts but shot 39% from the field and 29% from three-point range. He’s a capable shot-creator and in a better offensive scheme could be more efficient. But Jones is one of the best pure scorers among those left in the portal.
As a two-time transfer, Jones will need either a waiver or to graduate this Summer to be eligible to play next season. But there’s a chance that can happen. So for this piece, we’ll assume that he won’t have to sit. There are five programs that are potentially in the mix to land Jones.
Here are my thoughts on the potential fits.
Arkansas Razorbacks
The Razorbacks are without Jordan Walsh, who stayed in the NBA Draft. They did, however, bring back Davonte Davis, for a huge depth of backcourt players. They can easily play three-guard lineups that would Jones at the three-spot.
After losing at both DePaul and St. John’s, Jones could join what would be a potential preseason top-10 team for next year. His role wouldn’t be as large at this spot compared to the others, which would be the one negative. But the potential for winning very much could overcome that.
