We’re at the point in NCAA Basketball recruitments where the month of June is going to give us more free agents in the 2023 class. One program that’s gone through roster changes is North Carolina. Just a week ago, they landed top 50 guard Elliott Cadeau after he reclassified. However, the result of that was losing Simeon Wilcher.

Wilcher was a longtime commit to the Tar Heels, dating all the way back to 2021. He’s a 6’4 combo guard from New Jersey and is known as a quality perimeter player. He’s a legit scorer and has playmaking ability and is someone with legit pro potential down the road.

Unfortunately, Wilcher has opted to leave the program and instantly becomes one of the top free agents available. Since he was linked to North Carolina for a while even before his commitment, look for there to be a wide open recruitment for his services. Here’s a list of teams to potentially watch out for this time around.

Indiana Hoosiers

When Wilcher became a free agent, Indiana was a team viewed as a potential option for multiple reasons. One, they’re still looking for an off-guard to pair with returning veteran point guard, Xavier Johnson at the two-spot. The other point is that the former Tar Heel can reunite with Mackenzie Mgbako, a former high school teammate of his.

Indiana has already benefitted from a de-commit situation this offseason and hoping to strike again. And for Wilcher, he can spend one year playing off-ball next to Johnson before potentially taking over the lead guard role as a sophomore afterward.

Michigan Wolverines

The Wolverines are busy trying to land Tennessee transfer Olivier Nkamhoua but they also need to worry about the backcourt, after being forced to part ways with former UNC guard, Caleb Love. There’s a chance that Alabama transfer Nimari Burnett will be eligible to play next season, while Jaelin Llewellyn will be back and healthy after missing most of last year with an injury.

Still, there’s a lack of scoring depth for Michigan and plenty of room for someone like Wilcher to come in and have a sizeable role. And with 8.8 ppg scorer Dug McDaniel being the top offensive option on paper, this would be an opportunity for this player to be more than a mere role player as a freshman.
