UConn Basketball: 3 pros and cons for Huskies leaving Big East Conference
By John Makuch
The rumors have continued to pile in regarding UConn Basketball and their potential departure from the Big East Conference.
This has all made plenty of sense considering their dominance in basketball, winning the Men’s National Championship and the Women’s Big East title yet again.
The Huskies have also been a dominant force in baseball, softball, and other sports throughout the conference, being the largest in terms of total enrollment also helps.
UConn and its recent success in football have also played a huge part in a potential move to a conference like the ACC or the Big 12.
Football is king in terms of money, and the Huskies made their first bowl game appearance since 2015 with first-year UConn head coach Jim Mora.
UConn moving to another conference all has to do with the dollar signs, and while there is a $30 million exit fee from the Big East, the future television deals that a successful football program can bring in the ACC or Big 12 will make that $30 million chump change over the next decade or so.
It is a huge risk though considering the program has not historically been a premiere college football program, UConn is a basketball school, through and through.
It may be more beneficial for the Huskies to remain a basketball school, and remain in the Big East, but money talks, and UConn might just talk back.
There are many pros and cons to the situation, and the Huskies will be considering all of them as they come to their final decision.
