Gonzaga Bulldogs
The Bulldogs got a resolution with senior guard Malachi Smith, with him ultimately staying in the NBA Draft. The program was also in the mix for former UNC guard Caleb Love but he ended up going to Arizona. This is a program that still has two open scholarships and still needs one more ball-handler.
Mulcahy could slide into the starting lineup alongside Creighton transfer Ryan Nembhard and Nolan Hickman. Bringing the former Rutgers guard could very well push Hickman as the first guard off the bench but he’d still get around 20-25 mpg. And even if they were to use three-guard lineups, Mulcahy’s 6’7 frame would allow him to play at the three, especially in the WCC.
Illinois Fighting Illini
Illinois is a complicated option because after missing out on Toledo transfer, Rayj Dennis, the team landed Iowa State guard Jeremiah Williams. But there are two issues with him being the new point guard. One is that he’s a two-time transfer and will need a waiver to be eligible to play next season. The other is that he’s coming off a season-ending injury and may not be 100% either.
So it would make sense to add a ball-handler with 100% certainty, especially being an All-Big Ten caliber guard. Bringing both Terrence Shannon Jr. and Coleman Hawkins back are massive moves but they still need a proven point guard to make the offense works. Landing Mulcahy would be the type of move that makes them a preseason top-10 team.
