Rutgers Basketball finally gets some good news with the commitment of prospect Bryce Dortch. What does the four-star forward offer the Scarlet Knights?

It’s been a rough past month for Rutgers Basketball. They had not only a pair of key starters to the transfer portal in Cam Spencer and Paul Mulcahy but also lost a commitment from the 2024 class. Deliquan Warren was a four-star wing and a tough loss.

To the program’s credit, they were able to land someone just as good as Warren. The newcomer is Bryce Dortch, a 6’8 forward from the state of Massachusetts. He’s known for being a quality defender, using both his size and versatility to deal with players from multiple positions.

Dortch is a natural fit for the Scarlet Knights, someone that can eventually replace Caleb McConnell. He’s the third commitment for the program’s 2024 class, joining four-star forward Lathan Sommerville and five-star wing, Ace Bailey. This class has the chance to easily become Rutger’s best ever, as they’re a reported favorite to land another five-star prospect, guard Dylan Harper.

There’s no question that the program suffered by losing both Spencer and Mulcahy. But while they’ll likely take a step back next season, the future for Rutgers Basketball is very bright. Besides the potential historic 2024 class, the team already has top-50 incoming shooting guard, Gavin Griffiths joining the roster.

But despite all of the new talent joining the program, it’s still going to be important to maintain the same style of toughness and physicality under the Coach Steve Pikiell era that made the Scarlet Knights competitive in the first place. Dortch isn’t a five-star talent but he fits what the team does so well on the defensive end and he has growth potential as a scorer as well.

Most importantly, this pickup of Bryce Dortch is a sigh of relief for the program after taking losses. This time around, the Big Ten program was able to beat out both Virginia Tech and Temple for his services and get some much-needed momentum.
