West Virginia Basketball: 10 candidates to replace Bob Huggins as head coach
By Joey Loose
Andy Kennedy
There weren’t a ton of former West Virginia assistants considered today, though a few have taken head coaching positions over the years with moderate levels of success. However, there is one more branch of Bob Huggins’ coaching tree left to consider and Kennedy might actually fit really well into this Mountaineers program.
Kennedy played his college ball at UAB and spent a decent stretch on their coaching staff before Huggins brought him to Cincinnati way back in 2001. Four years later, it was actually Kennedy who replaced Huggins as interim head coach, leading the Bearcats to a respectable season. Kennedy then spent 12 decent seasons as head coach at Ole Miss before landing back at his alma mater in 2020. These last three years at UAB have seen him win 78 games and prove he’s ready for another power conference coaching position.
Replacing Huggins twice in a row would be quite the feat but Kennedy actually makes sense for this job. He’s proven he can win at UAB and he was actually pretty decent at Ole Miss, which isn’t exactly a basketball school. Whether or not he would leave his alma mater is one thing, but Kennedy is certainly an attractive candidate both now and potential a year from now. It’s all about if he wants to coach in the Big 12; he certainly has plenty of experience.
