Atlantic 10 Basketball: Ranking of 25 best players from last decade (2013-23)
By Joey Loose
12. Jon Axel Gudmundsson
Another fantastic international product at Davidson, Gudmundsson is a 6’5 guard originally from Iceland who starred for the Wildcats in the late 2010’s. A talented combo guard, he started all but two of the 128 games he played at Davidson, emerging as a major threat in the A-10 in the years before the pandemic.
Gudmundsson had a decent start to his career and actually averaged 5.1 assists per game as a sophomore, a year where he also shot 40% from long range. That same year saw him score 21 points in Davidson’s NCAA Tournament loss to Kentucky. He’d average 16.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game in a thrilling junior season which included a career-high 33-point outing in a win over Wichita State. His numbers as a senior were just as impressive despite the season being cut short by the pandemic.
That thrilling junior season not only saw him as one of the top scorers and rebounders in the league, but he was named A-10 Player of the Year. Twice honored as All-A-10 by the league, he was another important weapon for a Wildcats squad that’s fit in well in this conference since joining less than a decade ago. Gudmundsson was a solid shooter and active in the offense for his entire time in Davidson.
