The major NCAA Basketball offseason storylines mostly had to do with the transfer portal. And after two and a half months, it looked as if things were almost done with the portal. However, recent developments in West Virginia now has provided a chance for multiple players to enter.

Last weekend, head coach Bob Huggins was fired due to a DUI arrest, throwing the entire program into disarray. He had a roster that could’ve gotten preseason top-25 votes for the 2023-24 campaign due to how successful they were in the portal this offseason. They also returned starting forward Tre Mitchell, who had a successful first year with the Mountaineers.

Mitchell, a former top-100 prospect out of Pittsburgh, averaged 11.7 ppg and a team-leading 5.5 rpg this past season. That included 47% shooting from the field and 36% from three-point range. The 6’9 big man had a trio of 20+ point games, including 22 on 8/15 shooting against Oklahoma State.

After stints at both UMass and Texas prior to West Virginia, Mitchell is now set to play for his fourth NCAA Basketball program after reportedly entering the transfer portal. He’s set to be a grad transfer, using his 5th and final season of eligibility. He’s capable of playing both center and power forward but since he played most of his minutes at the four-spot, look for teams to want to have him there next season.

There are still plenty of programs that have a need for someone of Mitchell’s caliber late into the offseason. Here’s a list of eight programs that could potentially get into the mix in the next week or so.
