Seemingly out of nowhere, Texas Tech Basketball was able to bring one last addition to the roster in Devan Cambridge, a former starter at Arizona State.

After three years at Auburn, Devan Cambridge went over to Arizona State for the last season, having his best campaign to date. He averaged 9.8 ppg and 5.4 rpg on 50% shooting from the field as a full-time starter, including a season-high 18 points against Washington.

Early this offseason, Cambridge entered the transfer portal and had already picked his destination spot. It was to remain in the Pac-12, playing for the Oregon Ducks. However, he never officially signed, leaving a chance that he’d de-commit and play somewhere else.

And that’s what happened, with Cambridge making the decision to play for Texas Tech Basketball. It’s the second transfer from Arizona State this offseason, as the team landed starting center Warren Washington a few weeks ago.

He’s also the second perimeter transfer for the Red Raiders this offseason, joining former Grand Canyon guard, Chance McMillian. It’s a backcourt that was in need of more depth, as only freshman Pop Isaacs proved to be a capable starting-caliber Big 12 player. The team also has D’maurian Williams, Kerwin Walton, and Lamar Washington returning, along with three-star incoming guard, Drew Steffe.

Cambridge can easily slide into the three-spot and give them a capable offensive weapon and double-digit talent. His experience as a power conference player also will be helpful for a team that on paper, doesn’t have a ton of go-to options.

New head coach Grant McCasland was late joining Texas Tech Basketball so it took a while for the roster to get together. But between the likes of Cambridge, Washington, and Washington State transfer Dishon Jackson, the team is starting to look fairly competitive entering the 2023-24 campaign. And they could add yet another piece, as they’re reportedly after West Virginia transfer Joe Toussaint as well.
