ACC Basketball: Ranking of 25 best players from last decade (2013-23)
By Joey Loose
21. Grayson Allen
Certainly a polarizing figure during his collegiate career, Allen is a 6’4 guard and former Top 25 recruit who reached stardom during four seasons at Duke under Coach K. Allen won a national championship in 2015 as a freshman bench piece, but really developed into a star over the following seasons.
Despite playing minimally as a freshman, Allen did come up big with a 16-point performance in the title game win against Wisconsin. His major breakthrough came as a sophomore, averaging 21.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game while hitting 41% of his 3-point attempts. The numbers weren’t quite as explosive, but Allen did put up at least 14 points per game in each of his final two seasons and got Duke to the Elite Eight to finish off his collegiate career in 2018.
Things got off to a hot start early for Allen, who was on the All-NCAA Tournament team in 2015 and was first Team All-ACC the following season. His overall contributions at Duke were impressive even if his numbers did take a step back as an upperclassman. Steal, he led the ACC in scoring as a sophomore and his play and demeanor have certainly left their mark on the sport, tripping scandals and all.
