ASUN Basketball: Ranking of 25 best players from last decade (2013-23)
By Joey Loose
1. Darius McGhee
There wasn’t a lot of doubt that McGhee would be named the top ASUN player of the last decade. This 5’9 guard was undersized and took advantage of the bonus pandemic season, but he put up some pretty remarkable numbers these last five seasons for the Flames. He joined the program the same year Liberty joined the conference and the rest has been history.
McGhee was a great piece off the bench as a freshman and a talented scorer already. He scored 15 points in the program’s Round of 32 loss to Virginia Tech in the Big Dance and would have a decent showing two years later against Oklahoma State in the NCAA Tournament. His scoring averages skyrocketing, putting up 24.6 points a game as a senior and 22.8 in his fifth year. He scored 40 points on four separate occasions and made just over 38% of his 3-pointers in his entire career.
McGhee was named ASUN Player of the Year each of the last three seasons and left Liberty after scoring 2,685 career points. These figures alone show his impactful performance with the Flames, who finished 131-37 these last five seasons with McGhee in the rotation. He quite clearly established himself as one of the sport’s best scorers, especially in recent seasons and he actually led the entire nation in 3-point field goals the last two years. McGhee will certainly be missed by the Liberty faithful and is just the second-ever player to win three Player of the Year awards in the league.
