Big 12 Basketball: Ranking of 25 best players from last decade (2013-23)
By Joey Loose
17. DeAndre Kane
Fred Hoiberg was fantastic at finding talent during his tenure at Iowa State and Kane was certainly one of those finds. A 6’4 guard originally from Pittsburgh, Kane spent the first three years of his career at Marshall, starting nearly every game and averaging greater than 15 points a game for the Thundering Herd. He grad transferred to Iowa State for the 2013-14 season, a decision that worked out for both him and the Cyclones.
Kane’s numbers were even more impressive than while he was at Marshall. He averaged 17.1 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 5.9 assists in an explosive senior campaign. He flirted a few times with a triple-double (something he accomplished at Marshall) and helped lead the Cyclones to a Big 12 Tournament title and Sweet Sixteen run. He averaged 18 points a game in that Tourney run, with his collegiate career ended by eventual champion Connecticut.
Kane was named First Team All-Big 12 and unsurprisingly the Big 12 Tournament MVP. He only played one season with the Cyclones but he was a major part of Hoiberg’s most successful season in Ames. He led the Big 12 in total points scored and total assists and put up impressive numbers across the board. His career at Marshall was impressive, but he took it to the next level at Iowa State.
