Big 12 Basketball: Ranking of 25 best players from last decade (2013-23)
By Joey Loose
2. Frank Mason
No ordinary 5’11 point guard, Mason left his home state of Virginia for the Midwest, spending his entire four-year career at Kansas. He never won a national title or even made the Final Four while with the Jayhawks, but his contributions to this program were simply massive between 2013 and 2017.
After decent production off the bench as a freshman, Mason proved pretty potent as a sophomore, averaging 12.6 points and 3.9 assists while hitting 43% of his 3-pointers. Putting up similar numbers, he’d help Kansas to the Elite Eight as a junior, but really turned things on for his final collegiate season. Mason averaged 20.9 points, 5.2 assists, and 4.2 rebounds per game, hitting 47% of his 3-pointers and nearly 80% from the charity stripe. He even got Kansas to another Elite Eight to punctuate that incredible season.
Mason already built a solid profile in his first three seasons, but that senior year was special. He was named AP Player of the Year, winning all sorts of awards like the Naismith, the Wooden, and the Bob Cousy Award as the nation’s best point guard. He led the Big 12 in scoring and took home Big 12 Player of the Year honors to little surprise. He really blossomed as a senior before Oregon ended his career in the Elite Eight.
