Big East Basketball: Ranking of 25 best players from last decade (2013-23)
By Joey Loose
24. Marcus Zegarowski
Creighton has risen into a national power in recent years and Zegarowski is a big reason why that uptick began. A 6’2 point guard from Hamilton, Massachusetts, he left New England for Nebraska back in 2018 and became quite the essential player for the Bluejays over the next three seasons.
He worked his way into the starting lineup halfway through his freshman season and did average 10.4 points and 3.4 assists that season, helping Creighton on a decent NIT run. Sophomore year was shortened by the pandemic, but Zegarowski showed his potential, putting up 16.1 points and 5.0 assists a game. Back for year three, Zegarowski put up similarly impressive numbers, including a career-high 32 points in his final home game. More importantly, he led Creighton to the Sweet Sixteen, the program’s first trip in nearly forty years.
Zegarowski was a very productive player in those final two seasons and it’s no surprise to see him named All-Big East for both seasons. That junior year was very special, leading the league in assists, hitting 42% of his 3-pointers, and getting the Bluejays into the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament. Much of the more recent success was certainly jumpstarted by Zegarowski’s efforts as the leader of that squad.
