Towson Basketball: Marcus Watson pickup gives them chance to win CAA next season
After previously picking a team, Marcus Watson is now set to play for Towson Basketball next season. How good can the Tigers be?
Around a month ago, North Carolina A&T transfer Marcus Watson had a list of three options in play. Two of them were mid-majors in High Point and Towson Basketball, along with Seton Hall of the Big East. The Pirates stood out for being the big program of the group and in the end, the 6’6 wing originally picked them.
But shortly after choosing, Watson de-committed and became a free agent again. The former Aggie and top-100 prospect was looking at other options but in the end, decided to stay in the Colonial Athletic Association to play for his final season.
Watson averaged 14.2 ppg and 4.5 rpg in 29 mpg on 42% shooting from the field and 28% from three-point range. He went for 25 points and 12 rebounds against Texas Southern, along with a season-high 28 points and seven assists versus William & Mary. Against Towson, the wing scored 12 points combined in two games.
Towson went 21-12 last season, finishing 3rd in CAA play with a 12-6 record. They lost its top two scorers this offseason, with both Nicolas Timberlake and Cameron Holden moving on. So there’s a big need for someone like Watson to come in and have a major impact. But with forwards Charles Thompson (12.2 ppg and 8.0 rpg) back, the Tigers are set to have one of the top frontcourts in the conference for the 2023-24 campaign.
Towson Basketball has a chance to compete for a top-4 spot in the CAA next season but College of Charleston, who won the conference and had a 31-4 overall record, remains the favorite after returning a good amount of its production. But don’t overlook the Tigers, who have now added an all-league player of its own to reload on offense.
