The messy saga of Bob Huggins and West Virginia Basketball takes another turn, with a fight potentially on the horizon. Could the former coach actually return?

After a month of mayhem off the court that started with Bob Huggins “resigning” from his job, West Virginia Basketball finally had a chance to calm things down. Assistant Josh Eilert was given the interim head coaching job and there’s some clarity with the roster after several players have found new landing spots.

On Friday, the Mountaineers were hoping to add to its roster, hosting Florida State wing transfer, Jeremiah Bembry, on a visit. However, something more important had come up that could throw everything into another tailspin.

It’s a shocker in the latest of shocking moves involving Bob Huggins and West Virginia. Weeks ago, he announced via social media his intentions to “resign” from the job. In reality, he was effectively forced off the job due to his recent transgressions, which included an arrest for a DUI (reportedly using a University registered vehicle), as well as derogatory comments made just weeks prior on a radio show.

The likelihood of Huggins being reinstated is next to none. Regardless of whether he truly resigned or not, the school has reason to simply fire the coach for cause due to the issues. Instead, they tried to let him go out in a graceful style but it seems that the Hall of Fame head coach wants to go out in a fight.

One factor that could come from this is how the next head coaching process could work out a year from now. If this situation between Huggins and West Virginia Basketball becomes extremely toxic, it’s going to affect those under his coaching tree, such as current UAB HC Andy Kennedy and Jerrod Calhoun of Youngstown State, both of whom were viewed as legit candidates in the recent go-around.

It’s become an intriguing situation from an outside perspective but you have to feel sad for the legacy of Huggins, which is set to go down the drain at West Virginia if this continues. We’ll see what happens next but one thing is clear, we’re not done with the Mountaineers this offseason.
