NCAA Basketball: A look at top early contenders for No. 1 prospect Cooper Flagg
Kansas Jayhawks
Kansas can make the case of being the program with the highest upside at the moment. They just won a national championship, have arguably the best coach in all of NCAA Basketball in Bill Self, and had another great offseason, landing who many would say was the best available transfer in center Hunter Dickinson. He has two years left but if he only stayed for one, that would allow Flagg to come in and rightfully be the focal point of the offense.
Flagg would be a perfect compliment to forward KJ Adams since he can play and guard both inside positions. And Kansas is a guarantee to have a great regular season and be a Final Four threat, especially with Flagg on the roster. For a one-year situation, the Jayhawks may have the most to offer for the top prospect.
Michigan Wolverines
Although the win-loss may not show it, Coach Juwan Howard has a nice short history of sending players to the NBA, with two recent top-15 picks (Jett Howard and Kobe Bufkin). It’s a team that’s rebuilding and lacks starpower but a year from now with Flagg would solve that.
Being developed by a long-time NBA veteran forward would be ideal for Flagg since he’s destined for the pros. The only concern would be whether or not Coach Howard is on the hot seat but if he were to land this commitment, that wouldn’t be an issue. What would be is whether or not the Wolverines could surround him with enough talent to be a title contender when he’d arrive or not.
