Right now, there’s one notable name currently left in the NCAA Basketball transfer portal. That’s Jose Perez, who was one of several players from West Virginia that recently transferred out after the saga with Bob Huggins being fired.

Perez didn’t play last season after transferring over from Manhattan and not getting a waiver from the NCAA. In the year prior, the 6’5 guard averaged 18.9 ppg and 4.5 apg and was an All-MAAC performer, shooting 40% from the field.

After entering the portal, Perez got interest from several NCAA Basketball programs, with a group of six being named online. Plus, West Virginia is reportedly trying to get him back as well. Here’s a look at how Perez would fit with each of the potential options.

Returning to West Virginia

Although there’s now a question as to whether Josh Eilert or Huggins will be the head coach at West Virginia, we’ll just assume the interim guy leads the way. The top three players on the roster (Raequan Battle, Jesse Edwards, and Kerr Kriisa) are back, which gives them potential. The question is how the depth looks, with the bench currently depleted. They did land FSU guard transfer Jeremiah Bembry, who is set to backup Kriisa at point.

With Joe Toussaint now gone, Perez would definitely not only start but likely play some at the four-spot with Tre Mitchell gone. He’d have more minutes than a couple of the other possible options and he does have a relationship with Coach Eilert. In the end, there really could be a possibility that the guard comes back.
