CAA Basketball: Ranking of 25 best players from last decade (2013-23)
By Joey Loose
College basketball is an adventure and mystery and we unravel the stories surrounded it on a weekly basis. The most exciting reveals come during the NCAA Tournament, but we learn something about these teams or players all year long. Every moment of the season and offseason are important, from a player’s first steps on campus all the way to sinking that game-winning shot in the Big Dance.
We’re continuing to tell some of those stories with this latest long-running series. We’re looking closely at each athletic conference and identifying the best basketball players of the past decade from each league. With 32 conferences at the D1 level, this has been quite the task and we’ve still barely scratched the surface. While some leagues like the ACC, Big 12, or Big Ten were filled with well-known future professionals, there’s plenty of intrigue in the mid-major leagues as well.
Our attention turns today towards CAA Basketball, one of those mid-major conferences that sometimes flies under the radar. This is the league where George Mason and VCU went on their Final Four runs, though both were not in this decade. The current makeup of the Colonial Athletic Association has been relatively unchanged, aside from a few moments last offseason. Programs like the College of Charleston and UNC Wilmington have had successful stretches, but they are certainly not alone.
Here’s just a quick reminder about how this series works. We’re focusing on players from just the last ten seasons, though some of these players may have played prior to 2013; those seasons won’t be considered as we rank them. Likewise, seasons at schools in other leagues will be mentioned and briefly explored but aren’t considered in our rankings in this series. Without further ado, let’s explore some of those stories from the CAA’s best of the last ten years.
