Virginia Basketball: Breaking down 2023-24 non-conference schedule
Tournaments and Special Contests
Virginia has one early-season tournament and two “named” games on their schedule this season, including a home tilt in the inaugural ACC/SEC Challenge.
November 10: “He Gets Us” Hall of Fame Series vs. Florida (in Charlotte, NC)
From the people who sponsored a really expensive Super Bowl commercial comes the “He Gets Us” Hall of Fame series, which has contests across the country. In Charlotte – not to be confused with Charlottesville – the Cavaliers will take on the Florida Gators. Expectations are high for Florida under second-year coach Todd Golden. He landed a number of high-level talents in the transfer and brings back Will Richard to either be a senior guard leading the starting lineup or helming the bench.
November 20-22: Fort Myers Tip-Off (in Fort Myers, FL)
Virginia knows the first game it’ll play in this four-team MTE. The Cavaliers will start off with a tricky game against Wisconsin. No team in the Big Ten has more production coming back than the Badgers. After missing the NCAA Tournament last year, it’s hard to imagine the program will so again thanks to the return of Chucky Hepburn, Tyler Wahl, and Steven Crowl.
Win or lose, the Hoos will get another game in Fort Myers two days after the first. The potential opponents are SMU and West Virginia. Considering the current state of the Mountaineers, a game against West Virginia might be welcome if they don’t have it together come the season’s arrival. SMU got a big win in the offseason when Zhuric Phelps pulled out of the draft, but the Mustangs aren’t viewed as a major threat in the AAC this year.
November 29 vs. Texas A&M in ACC/SEC Challenge
In the inaugural ACC/SEC challenge, the Cavs get to stay at home, welcoming in the Texas A&M Aggies. Buzz Williams’ team finished last season very strong and returns much of their core, outside of Dexter Dennis. With a lineup including Wade Taylor IV, Henry Coleman III, and Julius Marble II (players named directly after their forefathers need not apply!), the Aggies have legitimate second weekend aspirations for the NCAA Tournament.
How do you think the Virginia Cavaliers are going to fare in non-conference play for the 2023-24 season?
