Horizon League Basketball: Ranking of 25 best players from last decade (2013-23)
By Joey Loose
14. Cameron Morse
Youngstown State has never really been known for its defense, but Morse was a major reason the Penguins had any success on the offensive end. A 6’2 point guard from Flint, Michigan, he arrived in Youngstown in 2014 and was a minor contributor as a freshman before blossoming into one of the top-scoring weapons in the Horizon League.
After putting up 6.0 points a game in that freshman year, Morse exploded onto the scene, averaging 20.3 points and hitting 41% of his 3-pointers during his sophomore season. His numbers were similarly as a junior, now up to 22.9 points a game, even though the Penguins weren’t winning a ton of games. His senior season came in the first year for current head coach Jerrod Calhoun, and while Morse’s numbers slipped a bit, he was still a major presence in this offense for a third straight year.
Morse earned All-Horizon honors for three straight seasons, including the First Team nod in a junior year where he led the leagues in points and field goals. His offensive production was a major catalyst for a Youngstown State team that didn’t really contend in the Horizon League during his collegiate career. Regardless, Morse was significant and did have a clutch performance during the 2017 Horizon League Tournament as well.
