Horizon League Basketball: Ranking of 25 best players from last decade (2013-23)
By Joey Loose
22. Juwan Howard Jr.
The son of a famous same-named basketball superstar, Howard is a 6’5 forward from Detroit who began his own journey at Western Michigan. Dissatisfied with his time with the Broncos, he stayed in his home state of Michigan, transferring to Detroit Mercy in 2012 to spend his final three years in the Horizon League with the Titans. There he’d become a significant part of the Titans program, even if we’re counting just his final two seasons.
As a junior, Howard became the go-to scorer for Detroit, averaging 18.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. He put up 35 points in a loss to Valparaiso and showed plenty of promise for the Titans. He put up inspiring numbers in his senior season as well, with the Titans finishing slightly better in the standings. This time, Howard made nearly 41% of his shots from outside the arc and had some standout performances late in the year.
While Howard wasn’t exactly the same level of player as his father, he was named Second Team All-Horizon for each of those seasons. He ranked among the league’s top scorers and most accurate shooters in those upperclassman years and played a major role for Ray McCallum’s program nearly a decade ago. He was an impactful presence and was Detroit’s offensive force doing those final two campaigns.
