NCAA Basketball Recruiting: Analyzing top 5 teams for 4-star big Aiden Sherrell

Aiden Sherrell is one of the top big men in the 2024 NCAA Basketball recruiting class. Which five programs are in the running to land him?

The latest NCAA Basketball prospect to let us know which teams are after them is Aiden Sherrell, a fast-rising big man in the 2024 class. He’s a 6’11 big that plays the center position and has a good all-around game. The Detroit, Michigan native is capable of making three-point shots, along with being a capable rim protector.

Sherrell is reportedly set to announce a decision on August 13th, picking between one of the five teams listed below. Here’s a look at how he’d fit with each of them when it comes to potential playing time.

Alabama Crimson Tide

After losing Charles Bediako to the NBA Draft, the Tide rebounded by adding WVU transfer Mohamed Wague, as well as former North Dakota State star, Grant Nelson. Along with returning forward Nick Pringle, each could leave after their fourth season. Either way, Sherrell would get early minutes and give Alabama that needed interior presence needed to compete in the SEC going forward.

Michigan State

The defacto “home option” of the group, Sherrell would be able to develop under Coach Tom Izzo and should be able to become the starting center not too long from when he’d arrive. Incoming five-star prospect Xavier Booker isn’t going to be around the program for longer than 1-2 years max and four-star commit Jesse McCullough is more of a forward than a center. If Mady Sissoko isn’t around for more than one more year, then this prospect would definitely get early minutes.

Ohio State Buckeyes

The center position is interesting for Ohio State because they currently have three bigs capable of playing there. Starter Zed Key has 1-2 more years left, while Felix Okpara is a potential breakout candidate after not playing much in his first year. Plus, the team brought in four-star center, Austin Parks for this year. Sherrell may be more talented than the two other classmen but there’s a clear logjam to deal with.

Oklahoma Sooners

The Sooners added Pittsburgh transfer John Hugley this offseason to be the projected starting center. But even though he has 2-3 years left, his health concerns are enough to where Oklahoma will need more frontcourt depth before heading over to the SEC. And Sherrell would be a better defensive option long-term as well.

Texas Longhorns

Another school going to the SEC, Texas has an even bigger need for a future center than Oklahoma. That’s because their projected starting center, Virginia transfer Kadin Shedrick, will be gone after next season no matter what. And the same goes for the other big man that’s set to get minutes at the five-spot, Dylan Disu.

Sherrell wouldn’t have to worry about minutes at Texas and would be a focal point for them out of the gate. The only question would be whether or not full-time head coach Rodney Terry is good for his and other top prospects’ development. If things work out during the season, they could be a prime contender to land the big man.
