9. Billy Baron

Baron is another college basketball player who had a pretty intriguing journey, bouncing between a couple of schools in his career. A 6’2 point guard from East Greenwich, Rhode Island, he’d spent his freshman year at Virginia before transferring to Rhode Island back in 2011. He played under his father for a single season with the Rams before following him to Canisius for his last two seasons. Baron’s senior year is the only one that came in the last decade, but it was a pretty special season.

In what was certainly his most productive season, Baron averaged 24.1 points, 5.3 assists, and 4.9 rebounds per game for the Golden Griffins. He helped lead Canisius to a 21-win season as one of the nation’s better offensive teams. He flirted with a triple-double on a few different occasions and had a 40-point, 10-rebound performance in a triple overtime win against Siena. Canisius’s season would end in the CIT, while Baron would accumulate eight 30-point games that season alone.

Only three players in the entire nation scored more points than Baron that season, while he also lead the MAAC in assists and free throw shooting. Unsurprisingly, he was named MAAC Player of the Year and put quite the explosive end to his collegiate playing career. He grew into a phenomenal backcourt weapon in his father’s programs but truly was the MAAC’s best all-around player at the end of his career in 2014.
