MEAC Basketball: Ranking of 25 best players from last decade (2013-23)
By Joey Loose
23. Quinton Chievous
For Chievous, it was all about the right fit and he certainly found that in the MEAC. A 6’6 wing from Chicago, he actually spent the first two seasons of his career at Tennessee but was a backup player who scored just 60 points during that time. In 2014, he transferred to Hampton and was with the Pirates to finish off his career, turning into quite the prosperous figure.
Chievous averaged 10.6 points and 6.5 rebounds in that first year with the Pirates, leading Hampton to a 6th place finish in conference. However, the Pirates caught fire and won the MEAC Tournament and then got a double-double from Chievous in a First Four win over Manhattan. He’d then have 29 points and 23 rebounds on opening night as a senior against Winthrop, a sign of things to come. Chievous would average 17.0 points and 10.7 rebounds and lead Hampton right back to the NCAA Tournament for a second straight year.
Not only did he lead the Pirates to a pair of MEAC Tournament titles, but Chievous was the top rebounder and led the conference in field goal percentage as a senior. He nabbed First Team All-MEAC with no surprise and played a masterful role in Hampton’s mini-run during those two years. Hampton hasn’t returned to the NCAA Tournament since that 2016 appearance, though they have switched conferences twice.
