MEAC Basketball: Ranking of 25 best players from last decade (2013-23)
By Joey Loose
19. Phillip Carr
Carr is a 6’8 power forward from Brooklyn who had an indirect route to the MEAC and D1 basketball as a whole. He spent a year each at Mohawk Valley CC and Williston State College before arriving at Morgan State in 2015, with three years of eligibility still in his grasp. He’d take advantage in those next three years and was a key asset for the Bears.
He was already a double-digit scorer in his first year at Morgan State and developed into a monstrous rebounder and scorer. During his junior year, he led the Bears to a 3rd-place finish in the MEAC while averaging 16.6 points and 9.6 rebounds. He had a long list of double-doubles and put up a career-high 32 points against Florida A&M during his senior season, though the Bears fell short in the MEAC Tournament for three straight years.
One of the league’s best rebounders during his upperclassman seasons, he was First Team All-MEAC in those last two seasons and was also the Defensive Player of the Year while a junior. He had solid metrics on both sides of the ball and was the league’s best free throw shooter as well. Carr was a solid contributor and did exciting work from the 4 for the Bears, finding his way to the MEAC after quite the journey.
