Nebraska Basketball: Cornhuskers luck out with transfer Jarron Coleman
With one scholarship left, Nebraska Basketball was able to land another ball-handler in Jarron Coleman, a transfer from Ball State.
Nebraska Basketball is one of several teams that participated in the foreign tour, winning a few games in Spain. There were a couple of newcomers that looked impressive, including Charlotte transfer, Brice Williams. However, one of the transfers that weren’t able to play was Ahron Ulis, a former starting guard at Iowa.
Ulis was projected to be the starting point guard for the Cornhuskers but was held out due to pending legal issues back in his days at Iowa. He’s been formally charged with making illegal bets, making him potentially ineligible by the NCAA in the future. So the program needed to find an alternative from the transfer portal to take his place. Luckily for them, they found a solution in Jarron Coleman.
A four-year starter at both Ball State and Missouri, Coleman is a 6’5 combo guard. He averaged 14.3 ppg and 3.8 apg last season at Ball State, shooting 38% from the field and 35% from three-point range. He’s a capable ball-handler and better pure scorer and in his lone year at a power conference program, Coleman averaged 8.6 ppg and 2.8 apg in 29 mpg.
The reality for Nebraska is that Coleman isn’t going to be one of the best guards in the Big Ten next season. But they don’t need him to be a star. Between Williams and returning guard Keisei Tominaga, there are some quality off-guards for the new transfer to work with. And if the frontcourt transfer duo of Josiah Allick and Rienk Mast works out, there will be some balance on offense.
Coleman was a late grad transfer to enter the portal and it was perfect timing for the Cornhuskers. So no matter what happens with Ulis, they’ll at least have a senior ball-handler to feel comfortable with for the 2023-24 campaign.
