Point Guard

Starter- Dug McDaniel: 8.6 ppg / 3.6 apg / 30.7 mpg

Dug McDaniel started 26 of the 34 games he participated in as a freshman last season and while he averaged just under 31 minutes per game, he looks to become the leading minute man for the Wolverines this season. The 5’11 guard tallied up the eighth-most total assists in the Big Ten last season, but that number looks to increase. Not just in part due to the increased playing time, but McDaniel spent a lot of possessions simply dumping the ball into Hunter Dickenson in the post and being reduced to watching while the 7’1 center operated in the paint.

This season, the sophomore guard will continue to maintain a high pace of play while becoming a facilitator to all his teammates. Such was the case last season when he distributed at least five assists in nine games. With McDaniel at the point, the Wolverines’ primary fast break between the two free-throw lines will resemble what fans are accustomed to.

Off the bench – George Washington III

It is very possible that 6 foot 2 Jaelyn Llewellyn will spend some time at point in his second season with the Wolverines since transferring from Princeton, but since the All-Ivy Team member will be starting at shooting guard, freshman George Washington III will be the point guard coming off the bench. Fresh off being named the 2023 Gatorade Ohio Basketball Player of the Year, as a high school senior the 6 foot 2 guard did everything from taking tip-offs to splitting double teams on the perimeter for Chaminade-Julienne Catholic High School. Having clearly outgrown the high school game, Washington’s ability to protect the ball from defenders in order to get to the basket will be challenged in the Big Ten. Being more than capable to hold his own, Washington will get minutes off the bench, but is no threat to usurping McDaniel.

Limited minutes – Cooper Smith: 4 gp / 8 total minutes

After back surgery the 6 foot 1 guard made the Wolverines roster as a walk on. Last season his season high in minutes was just three versus Maryland and he failed to register a basket in his four appearances. The Academic All-Big Ten student-athlete will once again come off the bench in a limited role.
