Florida State Basketball: Projected depth chart and rotation for 2023-24

Florida State Basketball enters the 2023-24 season looking to turn around the downward momentum of a program that has seen its win total drop four years in a row, culminating with a disastrous 9-23 record last year that resulted in Leonard Hamilton’s team missing out on the NCAA Tournament for the second year in a row.

This marked only the second time that the Seminoles have finished below .500 under Hamilton, and the first since 2004-05, which was only his third season at the helm. Normally we look for continuity in a team’s roster when projecting success, but Hamilton’s revamp of the team was absolutely warranted following such a disastrous campaign, and it has the Seminoles’ prospects on the rise this year.

Five players from last year’s team have transferred out, including forward Matthew Cleveland, who made the Florida equivalent of a jump from the Hatfields to the McCoys when he left Tallahassee for Jim Larranaga and Miami.

Three transfers will look to fill that void. Former Georgetown point guard Primo Spears leads the way, and he’ll be joined by former VCU forward Jamir Watkins and former LaSalle shooting guard Josh Nickelberry, plus one incoming freshman, four-star forward Taylor Bowen.

There’s nowhere to go but up for the Seminoles in Hamilton’s 22nd season. Though making the leap back into the NCAA Tournament may be a big ask for a team that ended last season losing 10 of its last 12 games, an improvement on last year’s 12th-place finish in the ACC should be achievable.
