SWAC Basketball: Ranking of 25 best players from last decade (2013-23)
By Joey Loose
16. Shaun Doss
Arkansas-Pine Bluff hasn’t had the best success in recent years, but they got a handful of successful seasons out of Doss. A 6’5 wing originally from Marion, Arkansas, he joined the Golden Lions’ program back in 2018 after a year at Iowa Western. Doss was a potent scorer across the next three years, though he’d redshirt that second season. He’d spent his senior year at SIU Edwardsville before actually returning to Pine Bluff this past year.
Doss was a full-time starter for the Golden Lions in those three full seasons. As a sophomore, he was already averaging 12.7 points a game in his first D1 season. After playing just three games the next year, he’d put up 15.9 points and 6.5 rebounds as a redshirt junior in the post-pandemic season. Doss was solid at SIU Edwardsville before coming back to the Golden Lions for his bonus year, a season where he’d average 17.7 points per game in a better season for the program, now under head coach Solomon Bozeman.
Doss was the SWAC’s leading scorer in both 2021 and 2023, his final two (non-consecutive) seasons in Pine Bluff and was named First Team All-SWAC for both years. He was also the SWAC’s best free throw shooter by the end of his career and did just about everything for the Golden Lions as their most indispensable player. He had the unique journey of two separate stints at Arkansas-Pine Bluff and made the most of his time in the SWAC.
