NCAA Basketball: 4 teams that could be options for transfer Will McNair Jr.
After picking Providence in the NCAA Basketball transfer portal, center Will McNair is a free agent again. Which teams could be possible for him to join?
Earlier in the offseason, the Providence Friars landed Will McNair Jr. He’s a 6’10 center transfer from Mississippi State, with 116 career games played between the Bulldogs and New Mexico State. He only has a career average of 3.9 ppg and 3.3 rpg in just 15 mpg, mostly off the bench.
Still, there has always been great value when it comes to having a good backup big man, particularly those that are good defensively. The hope for the Friars was that they’d have someone who could backup George Mason transfer Josh Oduro in the frontcourt. Unfortunately, that’s now changing.
It’s a blow for Providence from a depth standpoint, but they have been able to replace him with three-star freshman, Eli Delaurier. That leaves McNair available late and there are not many options out there that can offer minutes. I don’t know which programs can even admit players at this point but with athletics, things can always happen. Here’s a look at four programs that could target the graduate transfer.
Georgetown Hoyas
The Hoyas could be in the market for a big man after losing Akok Akok to West Virginia. Right now, they have just Ryan Mutombo and Fairfield transfer Supreme Cook capable of playing the center position right now. Before Thomas Sorber joins the roster a year from now, McNair could not only be a good one-year rental for the team but could also start as well.
Gonzaga Bulldogs
Gonzaga is a team that has lost several players this offseason, including big man Kaden Perry via medical retirement. They also have Wyoming transfer Graham Ike, who not only missed all of last season with a foot injury but reportedly hasn’t been cleared yet to get back on the court. Unless they’re prepared to play Anton Watson mostly at the five this season, they need to get someone else on the roster.
Kentucky Wildcats
The Wildcats were supposed to be good at center after landing 7’2 Croatian big man Zionimir Ivisic this Summer. However, it’s been reported that he’s struggling to get admitted to the University. If that doesn’t go through, they’re down to Ugonna Onyenso and Aaron Bradshaw, two players that are currently out with their own foot injuries. McNair is familiar with the SEC and could be good for emergency minutes.
La Salle Explorers
McNair is from Philadelphia, which makes some of those local programs possible options. None makes more sense than La Salle, which has been trying to land a veteran big man. Right now, Rokas Jocius is the only proven frontcourt player they have and there’s not much depth behind him.
This would be an option where the Explores could offer McNair plenty of playing time while being able to return home.
