NCAA Basketball: 12 teams with most pressure to win in 2023-24 season
9. Stanford Cardinal
Coach Jerod Haase has been with the Cardinal for the past eight years. Not only have just two of them ended with at least a .500 record but he’s yet to make the NCAA Tournament at all. To some degree, it’s a surprise that he’s stayed around but with conference realignment nearly killing them, they have to wait a bit.
Now, Stanford knows it’ll be in the ACC after next year. The question for them is will Haase be there? The team lost two starters (Michael O’Connell and Harrison Ingram) this offseason but did land Providence transfer Jared Bynum to pair with Michael Jones and Spencer Jones in the backcourt, as well as top-30 freshman wing Andrej Stojakovic.
It’s a very veteran-laden roster that should be good enough to compete for Pac-12 contention. That also means that the program can start over if things don’t go well. To Coach Haase’s defense, it’s very hard to get transfers admitted at Stanford for obvious reasons and that’s probably why he’s been able to stick around.
Still, with new Cal head coach and Stanford alum Mark Madsen possibly being an option down the road, there’s going to be pressure to finally get it done. This is as good as ever a time for the Cardinal to do so.
