NCAA Basketball: Top 15 head coaches on the rise entering 2023-24 season
9. Jason Hooten, New Mexico State
Hooten, who was hired by New Mexico State in March 2023, enters Las Cruces with 13 strong seasons under his belt at Sam Houston State. While coaching the Bearkats from 2010 to 2023, Hooten accumulated a .607 overall win percentage and led Sam Houston State to a 26-8 (14-4) season just last year.
Although Hooten has yet to take a team to an NCAA Tournament, his ability to consistently sustain success at Sam Houston State leaves plenty of upside in his coaching trajectory as he now leads a program that has seen plenty of success in the past decade.
8. Speedy Claxton, Hofstra
The former NBA point guard Speedy Claxton was hired by his alma mater in 2021. In his two short years leading the Pride, there has been nothing but success. Claxton sports a 46-21 overall record including a stunner of a victory over Rutgers in the First Round of the 2023 NIT.
His strong development of players from the portal, such as Aaron Estrada (now at Alabama) and Tyler Thomas make his two-year impact in Hempstead that much more grander. Can Speedy Claxton and the Pride continue to make noise in the 2023-2024 season?
