Top-100 NCAA Basketball prospect Larry Johnson is down to a few options ahead of a decision this week. Which of them makes the most sense?

One of the best NCAA Basketball recruits from the state of California is Larry Johnson, a consensus four-star prospect in the 2024 class. 247sports has the shooting guard ranked inside the top-100, listed at 6’4 and around 175 pounds.

Johnson has shown to be a very capable scorer and has a decent shot. He’s the kind of talent that can be an eventual starter at the power conference level. And that’s who are currently after him right now, with reportedly five teams in the mix.

An announcement is coming fewer than 48 hours from now, with one of the following programs set to land a top-100 talent. But does any of them stand out when it comes to the roster situation?

Creighton Bluejays

Creighton’s two commits in the 2024 class is point guard Ty David and forward Jackson McAndrew. That puts them in a good position for the future in every position except shooting guard, assuming that star starter Trey Alexander goes pro after next season. Freshman Sterling Knox would also be competing for minutes but with wing Baylor Scheierman also leaving, there are routes for Johnson to get on the court here.

Illinois Fighting Illini

The Illini has two commits in the 2024 class so far but both are in the frontcourt. The obvious position of need is at shooting guard, as star Terrence Shannon Jr. will be gone after next season, along with UVU transfer Justin Harmon. They still have Luke Goode and Sencire Harris but neither are proven D-I guys, giving a chance for Johnson to come in and have immediate minutes.

Mississippi State Bulldogs

The Bulldogs have two super-senior guards on the roster in Dashawn Davis and Marshall transfer Andrew Taylor. Both will be gone, leaving freshman combo guard Josh Hubbard and class of 2024 commit, Dellquan Warren. This is a program that has a current and future need in the shooting/scoring department and that’s why Johnson would be a nice addition to class.

Missouri Tigers

Coach Dennis Gates has been busy with the 2024 class, already landing a trio of players. That includes two frontcourt players and point guard, T.O. Barrett. They’re going to need a scoring guard as well, as senior transfers Caleb Grill and John Tonje will be gone after next season. Indiana transfer Tamar Bates should remain around but there will be minutes available for Johnson.

Virginia Tech Hokies

The Hokies are going to have one of the best backcourts in NCAA Basketball next season in Sean Pedulla and Hunter Cattoor. But with starting two-guard Cattoor guaranteed to be gone, they’ll need to have a scoring guard for the future.

The team does have Michael Collins and freshman Jaydon Young but neither are proven options at the moment. In that system under coach Mike Young that has proven to be effective, this could be a viable option.
