5-star NCAA Basketball prospect Asa Newell is down to four team options. Which of them makes the most sense from a roster standpoint?

A couple of months ago, there was an update on the recruitment of Asa Newell, a consensus five-star NCAA Basketball prospect in the 2024 recruiting class. There were several teams connected to the 6’9 athletic forward, including some star programs.

But now, thanks to Newell himself, we know officially which teams have the chance to land Newell after he announced his own list. Here’s a new look at each situation and which ones have the most appealing sell for the five-star target.

Alabama Crimson Tide

Alabama has been after a few top-tier forwards in the 2024 class but there’s a clear future logjam to deal with. Even if both Nick Pringle and North Dakota transfer Grant Nelson leave after next season, there’s still top-100 freshman Sam Walters and former five-star recruit Jarin Stevenson to deal with. So Newell would have to compete for a viable spot in the rotation, even before a potential transfer comes in next offseason.

Georgia Bulldogs

The Bulldogs have a nice backcourt for the future in top-100 freshmen, Silas Demary Jr. and Blue Cain. The frontcourt is solid for now with D-II transfer RJ Sunahara and former VCU forward, Jalen Deloach. But they need a big name next year and Newell would have the opportunity to be a potential focal point of the offense when he arrives.

Gonzaga Bulldogs

With former All-American and WCC Player of the Year star Drew Timme gone, Gonzaga will need a future frontcourt player to lead the way for the program. Starting forward Anton Watson will leave after next season, while Ben Gregg has the chance to return for a 5th year as well. So Newell would get plenty of playing time for a program known for both winning and development.

Texas Longhorns

The Longhorns landed five-star shooting guard prospect Cam Scott this offseason but needs to address the frontcourt, since Dylan Disu won’t be around after next season.

Unless UTEP transfer Ze’Rik Onyema becomes a legit power conference contributor, there’s a clear pathway for Newell to come in and have a big impact for the future SEC program.
