Mountain West Basketball: Preseason power rankings for 2023-24 season
It was yet another strong season for Mountain West Basketball, annually one of the best mid-major leagues in the nation. Five teams made the postseason, four of which went to the NCAA Tournament. Unfortunately, four of the five postseason teams failed to win a game.
The other postseason squad from the conference more than made up for the slackers.
All the San Diego State Aztecs did was march to the NCAA Tournament title game, overcoming No. 1 seed Alabama in the process. The performance of the Aztecs in the championship game is best left forgotten, but simply making it to the last Monday of the season was a major accomplishment for the program.
San Diego State nearly parlayed that success into a realignment bid, having a very public dalliance with the Pac-12 before deciding to take a step back. That feels like ages ago, as the Pac-12 proceeded to implode, which could result in Oregon State and Washington State actually coming to the Mountain West. But that’s a story for another year.
How do the teams of the Mountain West Conference stack up entering the 2023-24 college basketball season?
The Aztecs will understandably enter the 2023-24 season with a target on its back, but it should be another strong year for the Mountain West. With the season about to begin, it’s a good time to take a look at the pecking order in the league.
Here are the preseason power rankings for the Mountain West Conference in 2023-24, beginning from the bottom of the league.
