The 2024 recruiting class is starting to round into shape for Kansas Basketball, adding four-star prospect Labaron Philon to the group.

Whether it’s the transfer portal or the high school recruiting route, Coach Bill Self and Kansas Basketball will always be in the mix for the top available prospects. Earlier in the offseason, the team made a big first splash in the 2024 high school class, landing five-star and top-10 overall center prospect, Flory Bidunga.

The team has also been after adding a ball-handler as well, reportedly being in the mix for several targets. But last week, the Jayhawks took a rare loss on the recruiting trail, losing top-10 guard prospect Jalil Bethea to the Miami Hurricanes. Yet the program was quickly able to bounce back with another point guard ready to commit.

Labaron Philon is a consensus top-40 prospect in the 2024 class, originally from Mobile, Alabama. The Crimson Tide were one of the four finalists for the point guard, along with Cincinatti and Ole Miss. But in the end, the chance to play for Coach Self was too much for Philon to pass up.

Listed at 6’3 and around 180 pounds, Philon is a quality playmaker for both himself and others and is capable of running an offense. He’s a good defender and rebounder as well and will be an impactful starter down the road.

The question now is how long will it take for that to happen? Starting guard Dajaun Harris Jr. has 1-2 years left of eligibility, while the team also has top-30 freshman guard Elmarko Jackson joining the fold. And who knows how long he’ll be around the program.

So there’s a chance that Philon has signed up to play off the ball a bit at Kansas but the program has done well with two ball-handlers on the court at the same time. And he’s good enough to make it work anyways. Expect the Jayhawks to find a way to get him on the court and become a future key contributor.
