Shooting guard

Projected starter: Joe Toussaint (14 mpg)

I talked before about Toussaint’s passing ability but he’s known as a scorer, producing a career-high 9.4 ppg off the bench with the Mountaineers. He shot just 37% from the field overall, along with 33% from deep. That included 18 points on the road at Pittsburgh, along with 22 points and six rebounds versus the same Texas Tech Basketball team that he’s joined.

Toussaint is better off the ball than creating his own offense. The same can be said for Isaacs, which makes for an interesting backcourt pairing. But the reality is that he’s the only other proven Big 12 contributor compared to what the returning guards did this past season so he’s going to get the first shot to start alongside Isaacs in the backcourt.

Projected reserves: Chance McMillian (12 mpg), D’Maurian Williams (14 mpg)

McMillian comes over from Grand Canyon after averaging 10.9 ppg and 2.1 apg in his first year as a starter. The 6’2 guard shot 49% from the field and 44% from three-point range on nearly four attempts. That includes a career-high 24 points against Stephen F. Austin on 6/7 shooting from deep.

McMillian may be too small to play at the one but he’s too good of a shooter not to be part of the rotation. How good defensively may determine his minutes at the Big 12 level. And expected 5th-year senior Williams to also get minutes as well. He averaged just 3.1 ppg in 11 mpg last season after putting up big numbers at Gardner-Webb previously. He still shot 36% from deep and could benefit from being in a different system.
