NCAA Basketball: Analyzing ’23-24 non-con schedules for state of Michigan teams
By Ryan Kay
All seven NCAA Basketball teams from the state of Michigan have some interesting and intriguing non-conference games for the 2023-24 season.
As you will see, there are some tough games on these schedules for all of the teams. Michigan and Michigan State both have a number of Power Five opponents on their schedules, including Duke, Arizona, Oregon, Florida, and Baylor. Western Michigan, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Detroit Mercy, and Oakland all have some challenging games against top-tier opponents as well.
Let’s take a look at some of the top matchups in non-conference play for all seven teams.
Eastern Michigan
Here are Eastern Michigan’s top three non-conference games.
You can make an argument that Eastern Michigan has the easiest non-conference schedule in comparison to the other two in-state schools in the state of Michigan but the Eagles do play five true road games, a neutral site game, and goes against FAU who played in the the Final Four of the NCAA tournament last season, a school from the Big Ten on the road, and another road game against a Big East opponent.
Central Michigan

Here are Central Michigan’s top three non-conference games.
You can make a strong case that Central Michigan will play a tougher and more challenging non-conference schedule than Western and Eastern Michigan. The Chippewas play six true road games and they play on the road teams from the Big 12, ACC, and Big Ten. They also play South Florida, Creighton, and Loyola Chicago on the road as well. Even their regular season home games are all against Division One programs.
Western Michigan
Here are Western Michigan’s top three non-conference games.
Western Michigan’s non-conference schedule is arguably in terms of difficulty, between Eastern and Central Michigan’s non-conference schedules. The Broncos do go on the road and play Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Northwestern which could all be very challenging games. However, they also play true road games against UIC and Cleveland State which could be considered difficult games but the Broncos should be able to defeat both teams. They host some teams of note when they play Georgia State in the MAC-Sun Belt Challenge and North Dakota State. They also play some neutral site games in Florida when they will participate in the Emerald Coast Classic.
