7’2 center Trent Burns becomes the 5th commitment for Coach Dennis Gates and Missouri Basketball in the 2024 class, now ranked No. 1 overall.

In the past few years, it’s been either Duke or Kentucky with the top recruiting classes. Yet at this moment, we have a new contender in Missouri Basketball. After coming over from Cleveland State, Dennis Gates, a former assistant under Florida State’s Leonard Hamilton, has become a problem for others on the recruiting trail.

It helps that the Tigers wildly over-exceed expectations in his first year, making the NCAA Tournament on a roster filled with mid-major transfers. But in his first full recruiting class, Coach Gates and Missouri have focused on top-100 talent. And now, they’re up to five commitments.

It started out with T.O. Barrett, a four-star point guard prospect early in the offseason. Since then, the Tigers managed to land four other key pieces in the past six weeks. Marcus Allen, Payton Marshall, and Annor Boateng were recent pickups, joined by Trent Burns, a 7’3 center out of Houston, Texas.

Burns, a consenus four-star prospect ranked inside the top-100, is not only tall but has the ability to stretch out floor with a three-point shot. He still needs to bulk up to be more impactful on the defensive end but he’s definitely a rim-protector that can block shots. He’s the opposite of Marshall, the other center commit, who is listed at around 300 pounds.

But ideally, Missouri can play those two a combined 40 minutes together in the future at the center spot. The team will be losing both Noah Carter and Oral Roberts transfer Connor Vanover after this year so the playing time will be available for both.

With this latest pickup, 247sports now has Missouri Basketball with the No. 1 overall recruiting class for 2024, a nice milestone for both the coach and program. Now, once Cooper Flagg commits (likely Duke), that’s going to change. Either way, the Tigers are set for the 2024 class, with a nice group of prospects to work with.
