NCAA Basketball Recruiting: Pros and cons of 5-star Boogie Fland’s final 3 teams
Indiana Hoosiers
Pros
Indiana is viewed as a “blue blood” in NCAA Basketball, even after the past decade of underwhelming results. They have the resources, fans, history, and elite crowd environment to appeal to players. After landing five-star prospect and former Duke commit, Mackenzie Mgbako, the program seems to have good momentum.
The obvious selling point to make to Fland if you’re the Hoosiers is having the keys to the offense on day 1. Unlike Alabama and even Kentucky, there’s no question about starting point guard Xavier Johnson, who has to leave after this season after six years of playing. And the only other ball-handler on the roster is Gabe Gupps, a four-star freshman who’s unproven in NCAA Basketball.
Cons
Mike Woodson is a good college coach, though he only has two years with the Hoosiers. He did do well with his first five-star guard recruit in Jalen Hood-Schifino, who ended up drafted in the 1st round of the NBA Draft. Still, Woodson’s college resume doesn’t compare with Oats and John Calipari and their history of development.
While Fland will be the clear starter if he picked Indiana, will the team be good enough to make the NCAA Tournament? Who knowns which of the trio of five-star freshmen forwards will stick around and the Hoosiers don’t have another commit in the 2024 class. If they were to land five-star wing Isaac McNeeley, I’d feel better about the future roster. But on paper, the other two rosters look to be better for 2024-25.
