SEC Basketball: Ranking all 14 head coaches heading into 2023-24 season
By Caleb Hall
No. 14 – Lamont Paris, South Carolina
Lamont Paris took over for the South Carolina Gamecocks last season and the result was underwhelming in year 1. Paris had been an assistant for several seasons under teams like DePaul and Akron until he became associate head coach under Greg Ward at Wisconsin form 2010-2017. He was also there at Wisconsin during their 2 sweet sixteen runs.
Paris then spent the next 6 years being the head coach at Chattanooga, where in his final year he went 27-8, won the conference, and made the NCAA round of 64. He almost took down the no. 4 seed Illinois but they fell short by losing 54-53. Paris took the open South Carolina job and the rest is history.
Paris went 11-21 in 2022-23 and it was an overall disappointing season. The Gamecocks only won 4 conference games in what seemed like a very low bar for South Carolina. Paris probably just needs to get his guys in there and run his system, and we shouldn’t judge just based on 1 season. However coaches like Dennis Gates turned Missouri around in just his first season and making the tournament in his first year.
Paris has some work that needs to be done and while he can certainly turn this around, as of right now it’s not looking good.
