SEC Basketball: Ranking all 14 head coaches heading into 2023-24 season
By Caleb Hall
No. 13 Matt McMahon, LSU Tigers
Matt McMahon took over for the LSU Tigers last season after parting ways with Will Wade after his NCAA controversy and brought in the former Murray State Racer head coach. McMahon started out his career as an assistant at a couple schools before staying at Murray State and then eventually becoming the head coach there from 2015-22.
He had the Racers rolling while he was there, they made 3 NCAA tournaments and made the round of 64 twice and the round of 32 once. Which isn’t a huge feat but when compared to Murray State’s history it is impressive. He also produced a successful number 2 overall pick in the NBA draft in Ja Morant.
McMahon seemed as if he would ready for a bigger stage and opening at LSU would be perfect for him. After the Tigers started 12-1 they then went on a 14 game losing streak and finished the year 14-19 with only 2 conference wins. Maybe it was just a string of bad luck for McMahon and the Tigers but they looked simply confused and outmatched during their conference play in 2022-23. This may just be an adjustment for McMahon and surely he will have a better conference record in 2023-24 but I can’t rank him any higher just based on what he “might” do next season.
Matt McMahon has the ability to be a good coach in this league and I expect him to step it up next season, and hopefully he will. As for now he’ll be towards the bottom of this list.
