Atlantic 10 Basketball: Preseason power rankings for 2023-24 season
9. George Washington Revolutionaries
2022-23 season record: 16-16 (10-8)
When they were the “Colonials”, GW had no depth last season, with only five players scoring more than four points a game. And three of the five are gone, including starting forwards, Hunter Dean and Ricky Lindo. The departure of 17.4 ppg scoring guard Brendan Adams also is a big loss.
What should keep GW afloat is the return of James Bishop, the top scorer in all Atlantic 10 Basketball. He averaged 21.6 ppg and 5.2 apg and went for a career-high 44 points against Hofstra last season. The other key returner if Maximus Edwards, who was impressive as a freshman guard, averaging 10.5 ppg and 6.5 rpg.
The question is how good is the supporting cast going to be? The Revolutionaries brought in a bunch of transfers, including a few power conference players looking for bigger roles. Benny Schroder (Oklahoma), Darren Buchanan (Virginia Tech), and Babatunde Akingbola (Auburn) have the highest upside, while Antonie Smith Jr. is the one with actual past production, scoring over seven points per contest at Evansville.
Unless sophomore forward Keegan Harvey takes a big leap in the frontcourt rotation, GW could be in trouble inside. But Bishop and Edwards alone will win some games for the team in order to keep them out of the bottom-tier. How good these newcomers are will determine the true ceiling for them.
