NCAA Basketball: A look at 2 possible options for WVU transfer Jose Perez
Jose Perez has officially entered the NCAA Basketball transfer portal as a graduate transfer. Which teams are reportedly in the mix to land him?
The latest stage of the Jose Perez saga comes just weeks before the start of the 2023-24 NCAA Basketball season. He was reportedly kicked off the West Virginia team in the past couple of weeks due to disagreements with the new staff. As a graduate transfer, he should be eligible to play this upcoming year, though it’s not a 100% guarantee since classes have already started.
Still, teams are still going to be interested in a veteran guard that has had college success. And teams that have been linked to Perez in the past reportedly are interested in him again, with a couple of visits already lined up.

Here’s a closer look at each roster situation and how Perez could help, assuming he’s eligible to play in November.
Arizona State Sun Devils
The Sun Devils bring back starting guard Frankie Collins but everyone else will be unproven newcomers. That includes mid-major transfer Brycen Long, along with JUCO transfer, Malachi Davis. If LSU transfer Adam Miller doesn’t get his two-time waiver, there’s certainly going to be a lack of depth in the backcourt. Perez would be a nice insurance policy this late in the offseason.
Ole Miss Rebels
Ole Miss is a team that still has a couple of waivers decisions to wait on its own for. That includes Georgetown transfer guard Brandon Murray, who very well could be the starting ball-handler on the roster. Besides him is ASU transfer Austin Nunez, along with former Saint Peter’s guard, Jaylen Murray. At the SEC level, there’s a lot of unknown among the passers with the Rebels, though between Murray and Matthew Murrell, they’re stacked on the wings.
Between these two options, Arizona State makes more sense since Perez could get minutes at the two and three-spots. It’s more of a risk at Ole Miss, though on paper, they’re more likely to win and maybe get Perez back into the NCAA Tournament in his final year.
