Butler Basketball enters the 2023-24 season with a completely revamped roster that is unrecognizable compared to last season’s team. Thad Matta enters his second season as Butler’s head coach after returning to his alma mater last offseason. And Matta’s first season back as the head coach of the Bulldogs did not go as expected to say the least. Butler finished the 2022-23 season with a 14-18 record with a 6-14 mark in Big East, placing them ninth in the conference.

Subsequently, the Bulldogs spent the offseason undergoing the one of the largest roster overhauls in all of college basketball. The team’s top five scorers from last year are all gone, and in total, only three players are returning to the team this year.

However, Butler was extremely active in the transfer portal, and despite losing nearly their entire rotations, the Dawgs managed bring in several solid pieces that look set to make an immediate impact this year. Highlighted by veteran guard Posh Alexander (St. John’s), Butler brought in six total transfers this offseason. Along with Alexander, Butler also added Pierre Brooks (Michigan State), DJ Davis (UC Irvine), Andre Screen (Bucknell) and Landon Moore (St. Francis PA), and Jahmyl Telfort (Northeastern) through the transfer portal. Along with the incoming transfers, incoming freshmen Finley Bizjack and Boden Kapke are set to join the team this season.

The influx of new faces make Butler one of the more mysterious teams entering the 2023-24 season, and the team’s success in the upcoming season will largely come down to how well the new pieces can gel together on the floor.
