NCAA Basketball: Ranking of top 25 team backcourts for 2023-24 season
16. USC Trojans
There were a lot of guard/wings on the roster last season which makes this type of content difficult when establishing positions. But all of them are gone, as Tre White, Reese Waters, Malik Thomas, and Drew Peterson have either gone pro or transferred out. The good news is that the best player, who happens to be a guard, is back.
Boogie Ellis started out his career at Memphis and has slowly developed into a star. He led USC with 17.7 ppg, shooting 43% from the field and 39% from three-point range. Ellis went for 31 points and six assists versus UCLA, along with a 35-point effort against Arizona.
Joining him is Isaiah Collier, the No. 1 ranked freshman in the 2023 recruiting class. The 5-star point guard has looked very impressive in preseason exhibitions and forms one of the best duos in all of NCAA Basketball. He reportedly had a 23-point outing against UNLV in a secret scrimmage and can already score at a high level.
The only concern with the Trojans’ backcourt is that they have no depth. Four-star freshman Bronny James isn’t cleared to play after dealing with reported heart issues and sophomore Oziyah Sellers, who played little as a freshman last season, is the only other guard on the roster. Ellis and Collier will have to play 35 mpg each for the team to be good and that could cause problems down the road.
