4. Creighton Bluejays

Speaking of “trios”, it’s hard to find a better one than what Creighton had last season. Trey Alexander, Baylor Scheierman, and Ryan Nembhard were all double-digit scorers who nearly took the program to its first-ever Final Four appearance. However, Nembhard had left for Gonzaga, while role players, Shereef Mitchell, Ben Shtolzberg, and John Chrisofilis are all gone as well.

The Bluejays made sure to find a new point guard to run the offense. And they found one of the best in Steven Ashworth, the star of a Utah State squad that made the NCAA Tournament. The 6’1 senior led the team with 16.2 ppg and 4.5 apg, shooting 43% from three-point range. He’s arguably a better offensive threat compared to Nembhard and can make the Big East squad even more potent on that end.

Alexander is viewed as one of the top NBA Draft prospects in the conference. He was second on the team with 13.6 ppg, shooting 41% from deep. That includes a season-high 32 points (7/12 3PT) against DePaul. And former Summit League Player of the Year guard Scheierman made the successful transition at Creighton, producing 12.8 ppg, 8.3 rpg, and 3.3 apg.

Veteran Francisco Farabello and freshmen Josiah Dotzler and Sterling Knox adds some depth to the lineup but ultimately, the team’s fate in the postseason will come down to the trio of starters, along with center, Ryan Kalkbrenner. Time will tell whether the trade of Nembhard with Ashworth works out for the program.
