NCAA Basketball: Ranking top 20 players for 2023-24 Julius Erving Award
12. Jaylon Tyson – Cal Bears
2022-23 season stats (at Texas Tech): 10.7 ppg and 6.1 rpg
In his first full season, the 6’7 wing was an efficient offensive contributor, shooting 48% from the field and 40% from three-point range. He’s now at Cal, which has completely rebuilt its roster under new HC, Mark Madsen. He’ll certainly have a large role in the offense (assuming he’s eligible as a two-time transfer) but his chances will depend on how much the Bears improve as a team.
11. Jamison Battle – Ohio State Buckeyes
2022-23 season stats (Minnesota): 12.4 ppg and 3.8 rpg
Compared to his two years prior of both Minnesota and George Washington (around 17 ppg), Battle is coming off his worst year offensively in NCAA Basketball. He’s still a quality scorer both inside and out and is the replacement for Brice Sensabaugh. If he gets back to being a leading scoring option, Battle will get back to having national attention.
10. David Joplin – Marquette Golden Eagles
2022-23 season stats: 9.2 ppg and 3.2 rpg
The 6’7 forward was the Big East 6th Man of the Year last season, making 40% of his three-point shots, including six games of at least 18 points. He replaces Olivier-Maxence Prosper in the starting lineup and will be on a preseason top-10 team. The only question is can he have a large enough role to put up the numbers needed to have a shot, considering that both Kam Jones and Big East Player of the Year are back as well.
